What’s your BIG IDEA?

Do you have an idea for a business or a new start-up less than two years old?

Would you like the opportunity to win cash prizes and support for your business?

Then we want to hear from you!

Now in its sixth year the Entrepreneurial Barnet Competition organised by Middlesex University, London Borough of Barnet Council and Barnet and Southgate College, offers students and local entrepreneurs the opportunity to:

  • Be coached by business experts
  • Showcase their ideas
  • Win cash prizes of up to £3,000

Competition Categories

The competition is divided into three categories:

1. Tech business

Entries should have hardware and/or software central to the business value proposition

2. Non-tech business

Entries should have a value proposition that is not primarily based around hardware or software

3. Social Enterprise/Sustainability

A business which has a positive impact on social, community or environmental issues

To be eligible you will need to be a:

  • Middlesex University undergraduate, postgraduate student or recent alumni
  • Barnet and Southgate college student
  • Barnet resident with a business idea or a business start-up of less than two years old.

Applicants must also:

  • Have the right to work in the UK.
  • Have not entered the competition in previous years
  • If your business is already established it must be two years or under.

How to enter?

You and your idea: The Pitches

The first part of the competition is the pitching stage

Candidates are given two minutes to successfully pitch their business idea to three independent judges which is followed by a Q&A session. If you are successful you will receive a golden ticket and go through the next round which involves submitting a business model canvas of which you will receive mentoring and support from business experts.

Pitching top tips:

  • Hook – Wow your crowd, get them interested and wanting to hear more

  • Problem – Define what problem your product or service will solve

  • Solution – Clearly state what your solution is Market size – What is the opportunity here?

  • Competition – What makes you bigger/better, what makes you standout?

  • Credentials – Why are you credible? What’s your most relevant and valuable background. If you have a team, shout about what makes them great Traction – What have you done so far? Customer research, trial, launch, are sales up month on month? Have you achieved any press coverage/publicity?

  • The ask – Make the most of every opportunity, tailor it to your audience, how can they help you? Feedback? Investment? Connections?
